Papenskuils MCC

AIS Electrical Engineers were appointed by Jua Water Solutions on the design and build as part of their project to upgrade the Papenskuils Outflow system. The scope of our work was to design and build a new motor control center capable of SCADA monitoring, local and remote control.

Client

Jua Water Solutions

Project Type

Design and build a new motor control center capable of SCADA monitoring, local and remote control.

The Plant

The wastewater plant is the largest in Eastern Cape, South Africa. It was designed to treat both industrial and residential waste until merged recent years. The plant has two outfalls of which Papenskuils is one of them.

Archimedes Screws

Our plant upgrade consists of 3 archimedes screws. The image depicted next to this text is a typical example of an archimedes screw. The system is particularly exceptional in wastewater works to displace volumes of water. This system on display on the left, is particularly used to recycle recovered wastewater. This water is returned to the aeration basins.

Papenskuils Archimedes Screws

Papenskuils consists of three archimedes screws that displaces treated effluent. The effluent runs through a contact tank where chlorine gas is subjected to the treated effluent. As the water slowly traverses through the channels, while the chlorine works to destroy all bacteria harmful to the environment.

Papenskuils MCC Sheet Steel

Once we completed our MCC general layouts, we ordered our IEC60439-1 compliant piece of equipment. The Cubic Steel was particularly tailored for sewage plant application. We made use of tinned-plated copper. The process of getting to this point is tedious and detailed, but for illustration purposes we skipped to the parts where things come together.

The Copper Works

In any motor control centre having your copper done properly is one of the key points to a safe operating system, especially during symmetrical faults. Power System do fail and if failure does occur the busbars must be capable of dealing with the mechanical and electrical stresses exerted onto it.

Tinned-copper made the busbars corrosion resistant, especially due to the environmental conditions against the coast.

The Incomer

The Masterpact ACB was selected by our engineer to protect the MCC. This particular air circuit breaker was equipped with undervoltage, shunt trip, 2E trip unit and motorized for remote control function

ACB Installation

The ACB is fully withdrawable, making it very simple to remove and send off for repairs, while racking in a new one. This provided minimum downtime for the system.

PLC Section

Our technician, Le Germe Bongo, completely designed the chassis layout, installed and wired everything on this motor control centre alone. The process took him a full month. This PLC section is equipped with a modicon M340 and HMI with a fully redundant backup supply.

Feeder Circuits

We equipped all feeders with earth leakage protection units to ensure safe operation and protection against insulation breakdown.

Soft Starters

Archimedes screw drives are all softstarted, this improved longevity of bearings and mechanical parts. The screws would be soft started and soft stopped. The softstarters are also capable of checking earth leakage that would protect motors from catastrophic failure.

Factor Acceptance Testing

Our team along with our client and control engineering house took on the factory acceptance test to ensure that everything stipulated in the accepted control philosophy has been reached.
